Interview with Epic Games on Bringing Games to iOS

Epic Games, the brains behind popular games like Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, have decided to compete with gaming companies on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch by bringing games to iOS devices that focus on utilizing the hardware. In an interview with Gamasutra, Epic's studio president, Mike Capps goes into more detail about the expansion to iOS devices.

The Unreal Engine, the heart of most hardcore games, is making it's way to iOS devices. Capps explains in the interview that these tools will make their way into the hands of Unreal Engine Developers, which means that games that use Unreal Engine on other platforms (i.e. Xbox, Playstation, etc.) could essentially be ported to run on iOS devices.

Capps notes that some games that push the boundaries of the Xbox, PS3, and other gaming devices will most likely need to rewrite some of the game so that it will work on hardware that doesn't have as much power.

You can read the interview in its entirety on Gamasutra.

At the Apple Music Event, Epic gave a demo of their forthcoming iPhone/iPad game called Project Sword based on the Unreal Engine. While it won't be out until later this year, iOS users can download a sneak peak (called Epic Citadel) and explore the environment in amazing detail.

Big News for Social Gamers

While games can certainly have the effect of creating reclusive individuals, OpenFeint has enabled a more social experience in many iphone and ipod games. This social gaming service has connected users to game-wide leaderboards, discussion boards, and competition platforms, and just announced today some additional features to come. OpenFeint will be adding PlayTime to its repertoire, enabling multiplayer features and voice-chat functions.

Not only is this big news for gamers, as it will enable games to be released a la Xbox Live, but it is also exciting for developers as well. Now you don’t have to be a top tier developer to create multiplayer functionality; PlayTime will enable Casual as well as Hardcore games to enable a switch from single player to multiplayer based on highscore competition, meaning that a developer only needs to have highscores in their game to be able to take advantage of PlayTime.

Watch for these cool additions to the app world as the OpenFeint 3.0 with PlayTime releases later this year. It is sure to change the realm of mobile gaming and introduce a completely new social experience.

iControlPad is Now a Reality

If you loves you some iOS gaming, then this will come as very happy news: The much anticipated announcment that the iControlPad will become a twitchy fingered reality has been realized.

Now, can we get a w00t-w00t?

As awesome as the increasingly diverse range of games available to iPhone and iPod touch owners is, it's a fair argument that many of the games that we know and love could be just a little more fabulous if the control possibilities weren't so darned limited. Seriously, how many of you out there can look me in the eye and say that their high score wasn't crippled by a less than perfect on screen joypad experience?

By introducing buttons, a joypad and analog sticks into the mix, the iControlPad has the potential to put that much more hurt on the likes of Sony and Nintendo by expanding the capabilities of our iPhones and iPod touches to fully realized gaming machines. Admittedly, in watching the video, the iControlPad appears to be a touch on the fragile side, but without laying hands on the product it's hard for us to say whether or not the build quality is of a premium nature or not.

The first mass production run of the iControlPad is limited to 3000 units. That's not a huge number when you consider the thousands of folks out there that play games on their iOS device on a daily basis. With one look at the video we've snagged from the interwebz of the iControlPad rocking out F-Zero on a jailbroken iPhone, we're sure you'll agree that those 3000 units will be sold out faster than you can say "Win!".

I suspect Wedding Dash exists largely as a way for busy brides to work out some of their frustration through casual gaming. A couple of my good friends are supposed to be getting married soon, and it’s been utterly mindboggling to me how stressful weddings can be. Finding the right person is hard enough, but [...]
