Developers Can Finally Give Students a Break in the App Store

Students everywhere will rejoice when they hear that Apple really wants to cut them a little slack, especially after they've incurred all of those student loans for fours years of higher education.

When developers log into iTunes Connect today, they will be prompted to accept a new paid application contract offered by Apple. The contract adds an amendment that will allow developers to offer education discounts when multiple copies of the same program is purchased. While developers must accept the new amendment in order to keep putting apps on the App Store, they will also be able to turn on and off discounts in the application management area of iTunes Connect.

According to the amendment, "This amendment enables you to offer a 50% discount to education institutions on multiple copies of the same app as described in Section 3.1 in the amendment above. If you agree to participate, you can apply the discount to individual apps in the Manage Your Applications module, or you can apply it to all of your current apps at once by choosing Yes, below."

There's no word yet on when, or how, Apple will implement these discounts in iTunes, but for many educational institutions, this could be helpful.

iPhone and iPod Touch Application List: Teaching Math with the iPhone

Everyone knows, whether they like it or not, that math is the most important subject in school.  Even if you don’t think you need it for your career, chances are you’re going to run into situations where knowing math really helps pretty often.  As I wrote before, education apps are becoming more common and technology is no stranger to teachers and classrooms these days.  So of course there are tons of apps for teaching kids mathematics being developed.  Many of these apps are directed at children still in elementary school and feature simple lessons about basic arithmetic.  There are also several apps that cover all the bases, from elementary math to calculus and linear algebra.  Growing up I was very much into math but everyone else wasn’t, so when I used a few of the

iPhone Application Gallery – appSafari.com: Honey Queen Deluxe

As someone whose math skills betray my college education, I found Honey Queen Deluxe, developed by VanKurt Industries, to be exactly what I needed. Apart from estimating my grocery bill, the tip to leave at dinner, or the miles I’m driving, math has very little part in my life. Not since my last [...]

A Cool Tool For School: EMD PTE

With the increasing use and acceptance of mobile technology in classrooms, teachers and students continually gain access to more and better resources for whatever subject is being covered.  Laptops are a common site in most college classrooms and professors have already taken advantage of online education resources.  So far this adaptation of technology has been successful and developers are now attempting to achieve the same success in the age of mobile technology.  A nice and polished example of these tools is EMD PTE.  EMD PTE is a new education app compatible with both the iPhone and the iPad which provides teachers and students extensive information about the periodic table of the elements.

This app is a great tool for both teachers and students.  Chemistry teachers can use it as a reference for their lessons or to plan and check assignments.  Students can use this app to help them with their assignments, to study for their exams, or just as a reference in situations outside of the classroom.

EMD2

EMD PTE comes with a periodic table with a general description, basic chemical information, an image of the discoverer, and (for the more stable elements) a picture.  It also comes with a large amount of functions.  Hit the menu button and you can choose to distinguish on the table elements with specific atomic properties, different states at room temperature, year of discovery, and more.  The app also comes with a list which ranks the elements by property.  So you can list the elements by number, density, electronegativity, etc.  The vibrant display helps to distinguish specific parts of the table and makes the aspects of the elements more memorable.

EMD3

What I like most about this app is that it’s a polished product.  The display is clear and easy-to-use, the app provides extensive information about each element, and it gives interesting new visualizations of the table.  The app is also multilingual so all the information can be shared with ESL (English as a Second Language) students easily, ensuring they don’t get left behind.  The only problem I found with it was that the table was missing some of the more recently discovered elements.  But such information can be updated at a later point.  If you’re looking for a great reference tool for learning or teaching science in high school or in college, this app is a great addition.
