Speed up typing with keyboard shortcuts

The keyboard has a number of features built in that are designed to speed up the typing process.

Typing punctuation and numbers can seem like a chore, because it appears that you have to tap the “.?123” button, then the desired character, and then the “ABC” button to return to the normal keyboard. Instead, you can do this action in one finger gesture—tap and hold the “.?123” button, slide your finger to the desired character, and lift your finger. This will type the character and return you to the normal keyboard, all in one action. You can do the same thing for capitalizing letters—tap and hold the shift key, slide to the letter, and lift up. You can also enter a period at the end of a sentence by hitting the space bar twice.

The keyboard has a built-in dictionary that suggests words below what you are typing , which could be either the word that you are in the middle of typing or a correction if you misspelled a word. When you see a suggested word that you want to use, simply tap the space bar and the word will be entered. If it’s incorrect, finishing entering the word. The iPhone will automatically enter the new word into the dictionary.

When typing contractions such as “they’re” and “I’m”, don’t bother typing the apostrophe—in most cases the contraction will be suggested below the word, and you can simply hit the space bar to use it.

Use the Caps Lock feature

You can set the keyboard to include a Caps Lock feature. Go to Settings >General >Keyboard and set the “Enable Caps Lock” to the On position. This will make the shift key a Caps Lock key—double-tapping it will turn it on, which is indicated by the button turning blue. Tap it once to turn it off.

You can also use your device to combine different address books in iTunes, such as Outlook on a PC and Address Book on a Mac. Doing this will load all of your contacts onto all of your machines—your iPhone, PC, and Mac. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Sync the device with the first computer’s contacts.
  2. Then sync it with the second computer by choosing a different account in the iTunes Info tab (such as Outlook) and clicking Apply.
  3. iTunes will then ask if you want to “Merge Info” or “Replace Info”—choose “Merge Info.” All of your iPhone’s existing contacts will remain, and the second computer’s contacts will also be added.

Repeat the process with other computers.

Get content on your iPhone/iPod touch from multiple computers

iTunes won’t let you sync the same content with more than one computer. However, you can sync different content with different computers. For example, you could set up your computer at home to only sync your music and videos in iTunes. You can then set up your work computer to only sync your contacts and calendar in iTunes. Maybe set up your laptop to only sync photos. This way, you can fill up your device with content from different places.

In order for this to work, connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. Click on your device under Devices on the left side of the iTunes window and then click on Summary tab. Make sure to check the “Manually manage music and videos” option. This will allow you to sync your contacts, calendar appointmets, etc. with different computers without having to delete your music and video content from your device.

Set up your iPhone / iPod Touch

The first time you connect your device and launch iTunes, you will be prompted to "Set Up Your iPhone" by giving it a name (e.g. "JohnsIPhone") and deciding whether you want to check the box labeled "Automatically sync contacts, calendars, email accounts, and bookmarks." If you check this box, the iPhone will automatically sync every time you connect it to your computer. If you don't check the box, you will have to initiate the sync manually.
